The Herne Hill athlete has accumulated a consistent record at major championships, having finished in the top eight at all major championship competitions. Her most successful campaign was in 2002, where Johnson picked up silver medals at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester and the European Championships in Munich, before finishing just outside of the medals at the World Championships in Paris where she finished fourth.
In 2004, Johnson won her third consecutive AAA Championships title and confirming her ability to peak for the main stage, the 28-year-old placed seventh in the Athlens Olympics with a lifetime best of 6.80m but recently her position was improved to sixth, because of the annulment of the results because of the disgraced Marion Jones.
Having established herself as one of the best long jumpers in the world, injury problems ruined much of the following three seasons. In 2005, Johnson missed the outdoor campaign because of a prolapsed disc and having returned to reasonable form in 2006, the former European under-23 champion had a horrible accident at the European Championships. Whilst warming up for the qualification round in wet weather, Johnson slipped on the take off board and landed painfully in the sandpit, suffered a micro fracture of the knee.
Johnson returned for the 2007 campaign but looked a shadow of her former self and subsequently lost her lottery funding but the British no.1 returned with a vengeance in 2008. Free of injury, Johnson improved her lifetime best to 6.81m at the European Cup, before finishing seventh in the Olympic final in Beijing. Johnson competed throughout the indoor season but was forced to miss the European Indoor Championships with a nerve problem in the lower part of her take-off leg.
Ironically, Johnson is allergic to sand and one of her nicknames is ‘clumsy.’
