Injury has marred the majority of Larry Achike’s career but when fully fit, the former Zambian has demonstrated that he is one of the best athletes in the world at the triple jump.
In 1998, Achike won the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur before making the world finals in 1999 and 2001 and was a fine fifth at the Olympic Games in 2000, where he set his existing lifetime best of 17.30m but Achike did not hit top form again until 2008, when the Shaftsbury Barnet athlete made a surprising resurgence, jumping 17.20m in June, which gave him qualification for the Olympic Games, where he made the top eight for the second time, finishing seventh in the final. In 2009 he made the World Championships in Berlin and although he didn't make the final, he still jumped over 17 metres at the Aviva London Grand Prix.
He had originally played rugby for Sussex U19s and he has a degree in Biomedical Science. |
