Phil started running in 1975 at the age of 9. He went on to run at county level as both a junior and senior for 27 years, competing for Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Derbyshire. As a student he ran for the British Polytechnics at the steeplechase, and during his career raced on track, road, fell and cross country. Following injury he no longer competes seriously, but coaches middle and long distance athletes from his base at Altrincham and District A. C.
