The age group definitions below are from the UKA Rules of Competition and so what is used on Power of 10 to determine age groups.
Track & Field (indoors & outdoors) & Race Walking Age Groups
U17/U15/U13 athletes move into their new age groups on the 1st October every year
Summer competition year 1st April to 30th September
Winter indoor competition year 1st October to 31st March
Under 13 Boys & Girls (School Years 6 and 7)
Age 11 or 12 on 31st August within the competition year
Under 15 Boys & Girls (School Years 8 and 9)
Age 13 or 14 on 31st August within the competition year
Under 17 Men & Women (School Years 10 and 11)
Age 15 or 16 on 31st August within the competition year
Under 20 Men & Women
Internationally this means any athlete of 18 or 19 years on 31st December in the year of the competition. In the UK athletes join this age group the year after they leave school/college (year 12), so some athletes will be 17 still.
Under 18 Men & Women recognised for International competition only
Any athlete of 16 or 17 years on 31st December in the year of the competition
Cross Country Age Groups & Road Age Groups
U13 Boys & Girls (School Year 7 and 8)
Age 11 or 12 on 31st August prior to the commencement of the competition year
U15 Boys & Girls (School Year 9 and 10)
Age 13 or 14 on 31st August prior to commencement of the Competition Year
U17 Men & Women (School Year 11 and 12)
Age 15 or 16 on 31st August prior to commencement of the Competition Year
U20 Men & Women
Age 17, 18 or 19 on 31st August prior to the commencement of the Competition Year
Senior Men & Women
Must be aged at least 20 on 31st August prior to the commencement of the Competition Year.
2020 Rankings including October overage competition
The year 2020 meant living in extraordinary times with many restrictions placed upon the athletics community due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To give athletes further competitive opportunities, UK Athletics extended the competition year for track & field meetings to the end of October to allow all junior athletes to compete in the same age group for another month. Our rankings for 2020 reflect that extension. However, to maintain the continuing integrity of the Power of 10 "all time" ranking lists, any performances done in October 2020 that might have made those lists will be considered against the normal age group rules for track & field (see below) where age groups normally change on 1st October each year. Any performances done on or after 1st November 2020 will use the new age groups - see below.
